Fixing Up Your Sump Pump

Fixing Up Your Sump Pump

Don’t forget to check on the condition of your home’s sump pump.

Don’t forget to check on the condition of your home’s sump pump. Like everything else in and around your house, it will need periodic maintenance. Here are some tips for fixing up your sump pump.

Keep Testing It

You won’t know if something is wrong with your sump pump unless you test it. Keep testing it constantly, as often as you can. You can do this by filling a bucket with water and then emptying it into what is called the sump pit. When you do this, the pit should turn on by itself. Clear the water out, and then turn the pump off. Make sure there aren’t any blockages or components that might be frozen.

Put In New Batteries

Throughout the year, you need to replace batteries in flashlights and smoke detectors. Your sump pump isn’t any different, as it’ll need fresh batteries from time to time. Although it shouldn’t depend on the batteries for power, if your sump pump has a secondary power supply, that’s great. Just be sure you put in new ones every few years or do it whenever suggested by the manufacturer.

Keep It Clean

It can be hard to remember to keep your actual sump pump unit clean. After all, we are all busy people with hectic, fast-paced lives. We often don’t get around to doing something, even if that is an important home improvement task, as quickly as we should. Disconnect the pump from its active power source, clean it up, and then reconnect it before you test it.

Perform Home Maintenance

You’ll also need to take care of other parts of your home. Even though your home made it through the winter without flooding, that doesn’t mean the same will be true as spring begins. Find and patch holes in walls and windows. More importantly, ensure that your gutters and downspouts are kept clear of anything that could block them.
