Tips for Maintaining Fire Hydrants Around Your Business

Here are some tips for maintaining fire hydrants around your business.

One of the most important factors of every fire protection system is to make sure that each component is regularly inspected and maintained. This ensures that they will work when you need them. This includes the fire hydrants located around busy commercial and business areas. There are so many potential fire hazards surrounding commercial facilities that it is always necessary to inspect and service each fire safety component. Here are some tips for maintaining fire hydrants around your business.

Inspecting the Hydrant

Before attempting to inspect or maintain a fire hydrant, you should be using the specialized tools made specifically for use on the hydrant. A hydrant wrench is designed for turning the five-sided operating nut. Next, after opening the highest port of the hydrant, you should turn the valve until water reaches the open port. This will allow you to flush any debris from the barrel. During this process, trapped air should be displaced to avoid any operating issues. You should also inspect the internal hydrant valve and ensure that it is clear of debris that would inhibit it from functioning properly. During this process, you should be using a diffuser or hose to divert the flow. Use cones and other safety equipment to keep traffic and people at a safe distance during an inspection.

Fire Hydrant Maintenance

There are several necessary steps to inspect and maintain a fire hydrant. Keep a reference sheet available and mark each step off as you go through the process. During this process, you’ll be checking the main valve for any leaks. In addition, you’ll need to remove and inspect all nozzle caps and threads. They should be cleaned and lubricated to ensure ease of movement. Check for any damage that the hydrant may have sustained, whether from vehicle impact or even vandalism. An important tip is to verify the GPS location for the hydrant, which is incredibly helpful in emergencies and high snow.
