Summer is here! It’s the season of backyard barbecues, pool parties, and staying up way past your bedtime. Summer also brings sweltering heat, high humidity, and driving rain. Is your home ready? Here are a few tips to help you beat the heat this summer.
Inside
You can’t cook it cold! So during the hotter months, consider preparing meals in your trusty crock pot or just take something out and throw it on the grill. Even something as small as putting some cookies in the oven can raise your home’s temperature by 10 degrees.
Learn to love cooler showers. The heat outside can make them feel especially good, anyway. Summer is a great time to have your water heater inspected, too, since you don’t use nearly as much hot water.
Outside
Stay hydrated! This is especially important for those who work or do other strenuous activities outdoors.
Trying to fill up the pool or turn on the sprinkler? We use more water in the summer than in any other season. Be sure to thoroughly check your hose and hose bib for any leaks. Even the smallest leaks can add up to a lot of wasted water over time.
Going Out of Town
Leave your air conditioning on, but turn the thermostat up to at least 78 degrees. This will make it less taxing for your system to cool your home when you return.
Don’t forget to leave emergency contacts! Will you be having someone coming to check on your home while you’re gone? Be sure to leave any contact numbers they may need just in case something goes awry, especially your plumber! Nobody wants to come home to a burst pipe or sewage in the yard.
