How can you tell whether you need a new water heater? Here are some signs to look out for!
Water heaters are fundamental to modern living. We rely on them every day for our showers and to help us wash our dishes and clothes. However, it’s a fact of life that even the highest-quality water heater will break down at some point. It’s important to recognize the signs of a failing water heater so that we can ensure continuous access to the hot water so essential to our daily lives. Here are four signs that you’ll need a new water heater installed soon.
1. Age
Old age is the number one reason why water heaters fail, and it’s easy to understand why. They are used every day and undergo a lot of regular wear and tear damage. Parts will break, metal will corrode, and tanks will crack. Most tanks have an expected service life of around 10 years, so if it seems to be getting close to that time, you might want to start thinking about a new water heater now.
2. Hot Water Supply Problems
Often, the first time you’ll suspect something is wrong with your water heater is in the shower. The water coming out of the taps may be cooler or run out faster than it has before. If the heating element is failing, it could be fixable, but it may also be indicative of a more serious problem that can only be remedied by replacing it with a brand new water heater.
3. Rust Water
The anode rod is a little-appreciated part of a water heater that attracts corrosive elements, keeping them away from the walls of the tank. It’s important to replace this rod periodically to ensure a long life for the rest of the heater. By not replacing it, you open up the walls of the tank to attack by the corrosive agents, resulting in water that smells and looks rusty.
4. Leaks
Check your hot water tank for leaks regularly. Old water heaters will tend to spring leaks as they approach the end of their service life.
