Finding the Cause of a Leaky Refrigerator

Finding the Cause of a Leaky Refrigerator

Where’s that leak coming from?

If there is a leak somewhere in your home, you may be quick to blame it on one of the usual suspects like a sink, toilet, or faucet. Typically, you may not always think of your refrigerator being a source of leaks in your home, but a leaky fridge is something you will have to deal with every now and again. If you are currently dealing with a leaky refrigerator, then you may not quite know how to handle it. In that case, take a look at these likely causes for your leaky refrigerator.

Check the Ice Maker and Water Dispenser

Check to see where your leaky fridge is leaking from. If it is coming from either the front or the back, then there is a good chance that it is leaky because of the ice maker and water dispenser in your refrigerator. This leak is usually caused by poor plumbing connections that are common in fridges with an ice maker and water dispenser, but fortunately, there is an easy solution to this leaky situation. All you need to do is unplug your leaky refrigerator, inspect it for cracks and leaks, and either tighten the connections or replace the parts as needed.

Defrost Drain is Blocked

If you own a self-defrosting freezer, then the reason why it is leaky might be obvious. It is most likely leaking because it is designed to thaw and drain away ice buildup, but in the case of a leak, food, ice, or some other type of debris has caused a clog in the drain line creating the leak. You will notice this is the problem if the leak is coming from either the lower front of the fridge or freezer door or if there is a pool of water at the bottom where your crisper drawers are, depending on what kind of fridge you have.

Ask a Professional for Help

Unfortunately, there is a very real chance that you are unable to find the leak on your own. You only have so much experience in this area making this a realistic and understandable situation. If this is the case, then that means you will need to call in for professional help in finding and fixing the leak.
