3 Signs You Need a New Water Heater

Your water heater is a central part of the plumbing system in your home.

Your water heater is a central part of the plumbing system in your home. To stay in top condition, it will require regular maintenance and inspections over the years. However, like many appliances, there will come a time when replacement is more beneficial than repairs. Here are three signs you need a new water heater.

Its Age

How old is your water heater? If it’s more than ten years old, then it’s likely that you’ve started doing more repairs and maintenance than you have before. Depending on the style of your water heater, it might be time to consider replacement. It’s an investment, but in the long run, it will probably save you more money rather than trying to keep up with constant repairs. To check the age of your water heater, you can use the serial number. The first letter represents the month of the year, and the following numbers are the year it was manufactured.

You Can Hear It

Water heaters are relatively quiet appliances that you don’t usually hear throughout your home. There might be a low hum, but it’s not something that you will take note of during the day and night. If your water heater is starting to make more noise, it could be a sign that the sediment that has built up in the tank is inhibiting the passage of the water. The sediment will put more pressure on the heater’s machinery which will lead to more strain. If you have your unit serviced and it’s beyond the point of just clearing out the sediment, then you’ll need the water heater replaced.

It’s Leaking

Efficient water heaters that are working properly do not leak water. If you’ve noticed leaks coming from your water heater, then there are some components within the unit that need to be repaired or replaced. As the metal expands and contracts from the heat of the water, it will eventually form a hole. Over time, the hole will get worse, and you’ll need to replace the unit.
