3 Common Garbage Disposal Problems

Garbage Disposal

Is your garbage disposal giving you fits and not working properly?

Your garbage disposal unit is sure to get a workout this holiday season between family gatherings and hosting friends for dinner parties. The unit is very useful for the modern kitchen, but it can be a hassle if it breaks down or does not work properly. There are a few problems that all garbage disposal units may suffer from, and today we’re going to list 3 of them.

1. Doesn’t Power On

If you flip the switch for your garbage disposal and it doesn’t work, you may have a problem with the power supply. Most disposal units have a reset button that pops out when the motor overload has gotten too hot. Sometimes the garbage disposal can trip your circuit breaker, so check out your fuse box as well.

2. Garbage Disposal Jam

When certain materials, such as corn husks, bones, utensils, or glass, are introduced into the disposal unit it may cause the unit to jam. This is a problem that can usually be remedied yourself. There is usually a small socket hole underneath the motor of the garbage disposal that allows you to insert a quarter inch Allen wrench into it. You are able to engage the masher plate inside the disposal this way in order to clear the jam. Make sure to NEVER put your hand into the disposal!

3. Clog in Drain Caused by the Unit

Sometimes your drain will become clogged because of your garbage disposal. If this happens, you should contact a professional plumber for help in fixing the problem. Usually, after disconnecting the disposal unit from the power, the trap has to be disassembled and a drain snake is used to clear the clog.
