Tips for Unclogging Your Shower Drain

Tips for Unclogging Your Shower Drain

A clogged shower drain is a huge nuisance.

A clogged shower drain is a huge nuisance. Here’s what you can do to make it go away. Stubborn stains may require you to try all of these methods instead of just one, and it might take several attempts for any real differences to appear, so be patient.

Use Boiling Water

Although it might sound odd, using boiling water can unclog your shower drain. If you’re willing to use baking soda and vinegar and hot water to unclog your bathroom sink, why wouldn’t you try it in the shower, too? Fill up a pot or kettle and heat it up on the stove. Be careful when you move the boiling water, especially if the shower affected is in an upstairs bathroom. Then pour the water into the drain through a funnel to avoid spills. Give it fifteen minutes before you run hot water from the spigot in the tub. If this didn’t work, move onto the next step.

Try a Plunger

Plungers can help you unclog any blockages in your toilet. By that logic, you can use them for your shower drain, too.  A cup plunger is going to be the tool you should use, even though there are many different options you could pick up from the store. Be sure to run some water into the tub to help with suction. Create a seal and press down harder and harder to make the plunger go, then look to see if there is standing water.

Use Homemade Drain Cleaners

The standing water indicates that there’s still a clog in your shower drain. This is where the baking soda and vinegar mixture enters the picture. Wait an hour or two or even three before coming back to add hot water to the mix. Keep using boiling water as necessary.
