Red Flags to Look Out for in Your Tap Water

Red Flags to Look Out for in Your Tap Water

Read on to learn more about the red flags to look out for in your tap water.

In general, municipalities take careful measures to ensure that the tap water is safe for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Although some people choose to use their filtration systems at home, others depend on the tap water to be clean enough for their consumption. However, in some cases, it’s important to be mindful of the signs that could indicate a problem with your tap water. Read on to learn more about the red flags to look out for in your tap water.

Visual Inspection

Your tap water should be clear. If it has taken on a cloudy or milky look, you shouldn’t drink it. If you’re skeptical about the water, allow some to run into a glass and allow it to settle after a few minutes. If the color remains, it could be a sign that it contains a high amount of minerals, like calcium and magnesium. Otherwise known as hard water, the high amount of minerals doesn’t necessarily make the water dangerous, but it can have adverse effects for your skin. If you have a water softener that’s working properly, you should call a plumber to take a closer look.

Metallic Taste

Iron, zinc, or manganese deposits can make your water taste like metal. If the hot water is the problem, it’s likely because of your water heater. If it’s the cold as well as the hot, it’s possible that your pipes could be rusty or corroded. This problem will also lead to discoloration.

Unpleasant Smell

If you notice an odor coming from your water, this is a red flag that there’s a problem. Clean, safe water should never have a smell. Various contaminants like metal, algae blooms, and bacteria can create an unpleasant odor. Flushing the water heater could be the fix or even turning down your water softener. If you’re not sure how to address the problem, ask a professional for their opinion.
