The Do’s and Don’ts of Plumbing Care

The Do’s and Don’ts of Plumbing Care

When it comes to your plumbing, there are some things you need to do, and some things you really shouldn’t do!

A homeowner is responsible for caring for every aspect of their home, whether it be the roof, floors, decorative elements, or plumbing. If you feel a little lost when it comes to tackling your home’s plumbing, here are some important do’s and don’ts to get you started on the right path.

Do: Protect Your Eyes

Whenever you are working with any tools or your home’s plumbing, be sure to have on safety glasses. Whether you are drilling, hammering, or trying to sort out a clogged drain, you don’t want there to be a chance of pressurized water or debris hitting you in the face.

Do: Protect Your Hands

Your hands are just as important as your eyes, and there is no reason to put them in harm’s way either. Chemical drain cleaners, and even some cleaning solvents, you may find in your home can harm your skin. You may even want to wear a pair of latex gloves under your work gloves to make sure you are protected from any bacteria that may have built up in your plumbing.

Do Not: Abuse Tools

If a tool has been specialized to create a specific task, only use it for that task, don’t wing it or try to “life hack” your way into performing plumbing tasks with the wrong tool. Always make sure you are using the right tool for the job so that you can avoid damaging your property or even injuring yourself.

Do Not: Ignore Odd Smells

If something smells a bit odd while working on your plumbing, don’t ignore it. A foul smell can mean that a block needs to be cleared. More importantly than funky smells, keep your nose alert for the smell of gas. Gas leaks can lead to major home damage if ignored. If you think you might have a gas leak, get out of your house immediately and call your local gas company.
