3 Things that Cause Problems with Your Dishwasher

Dishwasher problems can be extremely inconvenient.

Does your dishwasher stop halfway through its cycle? Does it also flood the countertop every time you run it? Then there could be something seriously wrong with it. Whenever the dishwasher clogs, it can be unbelievably frustrating, and it’s likely that you won’t know what you’re supposed to do next. Here are some of the reasons why it clogs in the first place.

Dirty Plates

It’s easy enough to assume that you can load dirty dishes and the dishwasher will take care of it for you. That is what a dishwasher is for, after all. But all of the gunk that comes off will go straight into the dishwasher’s filter, which is not a good thing. The dishwasher is really responsible for sanitizing, which means that it gets rid of germs and grease left on your plates and silverware, but it won’t be able to do much about dried ketchup and the other crud on what you load inside.

Too Many Minerals

Hard water can be a pain in the neck. This isn’t only the case when you’re trying to shower or shave, either. The minerals that build up in your water supply can interfere with how well your dishwasher runs. The dishwasher slowly becomes less effective, takes longer to finish a cycle, and returns disappointing results when it does. Getting a water filtration system can help you address this problem. Sometimes, though, that isn’t enough. Use distilled white vinegar to help clean out the dishwasher, which you will need to do from time to time. Doing this can help restore the water flow to normal levels again.

Filthy Filter Basket

Finally, it’s time to take a closer look at your filter basket. As mentioned earlier, it can get dirty extremely quickly, especially if you don’t pay attention to what you’re doing when you load up the dishwasher. The filter basket is supposed to prevent clogging problems, but it’s not infallible. Do what you can to keep the basket clean, and if you still have problems with your dishwasher, then it’s time to get in touch with the pros at Alpha Plumbing to come and help you out instead.
