How to Tell It Is Time for Drain Cleaning

How to Tell It Is Time for Drain Cleaning

Understanding the causes of a clog can help you with drain cleaning more efficiently and more quickly.

If you are like most people, you probably do not think about drain issues until there are visible signs of a problem. There is nothing wrong with that, but life can be much easier and cost you less if you pay a bit of attention. Understanding the causes of a clog can help you with drain cleaning more efficiently and more quickly. It helps much to understand what it is that causes a drain to clog, and how to avoid it in the first place. Read on to learn how drains clog, and how to tell it’s time for some drain cleaning!

How Does a Drain Clog Occur?

Most often, accumulations within the pipes and drains create clogs. This can be food from a kitchen sink, or soap and hair buildup from a bathtub or bathroom sink. When it comes to your toilet, an abundance of toilet paper or other things not meant to be flushed can cause clogs within your plumbing.

Signs of a Drain Blockage

If you are worried about a blockage, here’s a few signs that indicate it is time for some cleaning:

Slow Draining Sink or Bathtub

A sluggish or slow drain can be the first sign that you need some drain cleaning. This usually happens when a pipe’s diameter is constricted by a thick layer of soap and grime, or because of a blockage somewhere else in the pipeline.

A Nasty Stench

An unpleasant stench can come before a slow drain, possibly, but it is a sign of an issue. Many different things could cause it. These include rotten food within a kitchen drain or sink, even a small rodent in another spot near the drain and sewer system connections.

Toilets that Back Up Instead of Flushing

These blockages are usually caused by too much toilet paper going down them, or, more commonly, the wrong things that are being flushed down the toilet. This is very serious because the item blocking the drain could greatly hurt the pipeline, or even lead to damage within your bathroom as the water comes out of your bowl. If the plunger doesn’t help with drain cleaning, you should call in the pros to examine your pipe system.
