How to Prevent Clogged Drains in Your Plumbing System

How to Prevent Clogged Drains in Your Plumbing System

Clogged drains might not even seem like that big of an issue, but it could lead to some serious problems if you ignore them.

Clogged drains can lead to many different plumbing issues, and it is certainly easier and cheaper to focus on prevention instead of maintenance. Plumbers can sometimes be pricey if you wait too long to tend to a specific area of your plumbing system. Clogged drains might not even seem like that big of an issue, but it could lead to some serious problems if you ignore them. So, if you wish to keep your home’s drains clear and free, here are three easy and quick tips you should know. Read on to learn more!

Clean Out Your Drains Regularly

Because prevention is the very first step to clear drains, it makes perfect sense that regular cleanings go a long way in helping prevent clogs. In your kitchen, focus on your garbage disposals. Fill up an ice cube tray about halfway with vinegar and some water. Freeze your tray and then pop a couple of ice cubes down your disposal for grinding. You could even add salt for a much deeper clean that scrapes away grease and other forms of debris. Your bathroom drains will also benefit from a cleaning. You could use a bent wire or hair-catching brush to clear out pipes and prevent clogs, but vinegar and table salt is just as useful in these pipes. Pour one tablespoon of salt down your drain, and dump1/4 cup of plain white vinegar down your drain. Let it sit there for at about an hour, then run some hot water down the drain to clear out everything.

Some Things Should Never Be Tossed Down your Drain

Certain items spell disaster for your home’s plumbing: coffee grounds, grease, and hair are the top offenders. Never pour these down your drain. Pour grease into a container for future use or disposal. Toss coffee grounds into your trash can. Finally, use screens or drain-gates to keep hair from making its way down your drains.

Hot Water is a Solid Clog Preventative

This tip is the easiest to implement. Simply run some hot water down your drains after you use your kitchen sink. This will help clear out any leftover debris and will make future drain cleanings much more comfortable and quicker. If your garbage disposal is your main concern, though, consider using some cold water instead.
