5 Ways to Save Your Plumbing from Summer Flooding

5 Ways to Save Your Plumbing from Summer Flooding

Your plumbing can remain vulnerable to flooding even if you are confident that last year’s upgrades will stand up to any problems.

Summer is the time of year where you can expect the most powerful storms. Your plumbing can remain vulnerable to flooding even if you are confident that last year’s upgrades will stand up to any problems. That’s why you need to make sure that your plumbing won’t be overwhelmed,

Clean Drains and Gutters

The first step is to clean out all of the drains and gutters attached to your home. By doing this, you can prevent backflows from ruining your pipes and causing catastrophic water damage. Check on culverts and storm drains around your home and all of the other ones near your block. Runoff happens after every rainstorm, and it can make the ground soft and muddy. While this is great if you need to install a tie-out for your new pet dog, it can also be bad news for your house’s plumbing systems.

Inspect Sump Pumps

The second step is to inspect the sump pumps that you have been relying on for the past few years. You don’t want the sump pump to fail the next time your basement starts flooding. If there are clogs, then you will need to get rid of them. Then once you have cleared any blockages, fill up the crock with a few gallons of water and test the pump to see if it is still working as it should.

Turn Off Water Supply

Find where the emergency shutoff valves are and test them. Just be sure that you give everyone in your home a heads up before you do this, or you will have some angry family members demanding what is going on!

Look at the Water Heater

There could be leaks coming from the water heater. Believe it or not, when it comes to plumbing troubles and flooding problems, the water heater is an unlikely source. Turning off the power source can help reduce the pressure building up inside the heater.

Recover After the Storm

Once the storm has passed, take the time you need to recover. Look at all of the systems around your home to make sure that everything still works as it should – like it was before the storm arrived.
