Tips for Preparing Your Plumbing for Cold Weather

As the weather continues to get colder and colder in the fall and upcoming winter season, your home requires a few adjustments to prepare it for the change. If you want to avoid facing major repairs from damages that the cold weather can have on your home, take preventative measures now by checking your heating and insulation systems. Here are some tips for preparing your plumbing for cold weather.

Check Heating System and Insulation

Be sure that, before the temperatures become really frigid, your heating system is working effectively. This isn’t only important for the comfort of your family, but it helps ensure that your pipes won’t freeze and cause leaking or other major problems. The same goes with checking the water heater. Ensuring that the water heater is functioning properly to provide your family with the hot water that it needs will also help keep your pipes from freezing in the cold weather. In addition, especially when it comes to pipes, keep them insulated by checking your current insulation system or installing new insulation.

Check Doors and Windows

Your doors and windows are notorious for being areas where heat escapes your home and cold air finds its way in. A home energy audit will reveal areas where your windows and doors are costing you money from being inefficient in maintaining your home’s temperature. Repair any cracks or, if necessary, have your windows replaced with more energy efficient models. As an alternative, you could also use heavy curtains, weather stripping, or even foam tape to draft-proof your home.

Clean the Chimney

It may not be immediately obvious, but cleaning the chimney is a great place to start when ensuring that your home is completely energy efficient and able to keep your home and pipe system sufficiently warm. It’s necessary to clear it of any blockages so that when you use your chimney, it will be safe and clear of any fire hazards.
