Estimating Costs of Water Service Repair

Okay. Now the third BIG question: How much will it cost? Unfortunately, I don’t have a simple answer for that. Cost is based on the length of your water service (and in some cases depth), obstacles that must be avoided, the type of pipe used for the repair (Copper or high-density polyethylene (HDPE), where we are digging, and any other extenuating circumstances. We need to come to your home and look things over to provide you with an accurate estimate of the cost.

Understanding Your Water Service

The water service connecting your home to the municipal water supply is your first plumbing link to your home. It provides all the potable water to your home for drinking, cooking, cleaning, washing, and flushing. This pipe can be referred to as your water main, water service, or your water line.

No matter what the name, your water service runs from the main shutoff valve inside your home to the pigtail on the county/city’s water meter. The water main must also be installed (in our area) at a minimum depth of thirty (30) inches in order to be below the frost line and keep from freezing. This pipe is typically made of copper, HDPE, galvanized steel, or polybutylene (AKA poly-blue, poly, or big blue).

Copper and HDPE have proven to be reliable pipes for this purpose. Galvanized piping, which is no longer installed in residential applications, has a life expectancy of 50–70 years but also deteriorates over time reducing water pressure and flow rate. Polybutylene piping has proven to be a failure and needs to be replaced (for more on this topic see: Polybutylene Pipe Replacement).

Repairing Failed Water Services

Regardless of the type of pipe providing water to your home, when it fails, it needs to be repaired. You may have water bubbling up from the ground. Or you may not see any water, but your water bill just shot through the roof. Perhaps the water is seeping into your home. Maybe the city or county told you it’s leaking. That’s where we come in. Contact us and we will come to your home and provide a free estimate to repair or replace your water service.

Types of Water Repair Approaches

How will we repair the water service? It depends. Every situation is a little different. Sometimes we simply dig a trench from the point your water service exits your home to the water meter. Other times we may use trenchless methods. We can use a pulling cable to pull the new water service through the existing water service.

We can also use a boring missile to go under obstacles such as driveways. We have also simply driven a hard copper pipe underneath obstacles like porches and steps. Our goal is to minimize damage to your landscape, hardscapes, sidewalks, driveways, and home structure (anything expensive or inconvenient to restore).
