Nobody wants to deal with flooding.
Nobody wants to deal with flooding. Not only does flooding result in (often expensive) water damage, it is also a massive health and safety hazard for your home. Keeping your home safe from flooding is incredibly important, so homeowners need to be sure to frequently inspect their home, appliances, and plumbing system for any leaks or issues. Freezing pipes, clogged gutters, out-of-date washing machines, and clogged pipes alike can threaten your home with a flooding hazard. Here are three areas to pay particular attention to, since they are some of the most at-risk for plumbing hazards.
1. Bathrooms
The bathroom is one of the most at-risk areas for flooding in your home, due to the amount of plumbing used in this room regularly. Between the toilet, bath or shower, and sinks, any plumbing maintenance or video inspection should take care in making sure the bathroom is not at risk of an upcoming flood. Pay attention to slow drains in your bathroom, as clogged and leaky pipes are frequent culprits of bathroom flooding.
2. Roofs
A damaged or overburdened roof can result in serious flooding and damage. Every year, your roof should be inspected and kept clear of any debris and leaves to ensure that there aren’t cracks and warping that could result in leaks or even collapse. Even improper installation can make your roof vulnerable to flooding. When flooding occurs from your roof, it can result in water damage and staining to your ceilings and walls. Flashing damage and mold growth can also result from a leaky roof, so be sure to pay attention to this at-risk area for flooding.
3. Basements
Finally, the basement is perhaps the most at-risk area for flooding in any home. Many people keep their washing appliances in the basement, and much of the plumbing will run through this area of your home. It’s important to inspect the plumbing in the basement since this area will have multiple water sources and therefore be more vulnerable to flooding and water damage. You’ll also want to make sure your basement is free from any cracks and leaks that could allow groundwater and stormwater from entering your basement. Be sure to have your basement inspected regularly and also pay special attention to your sewer line, water main, and other pipes.
