For natural gas, the first step is to complete a BGE service application. Once BGE approves your request we can pull a gas permit and begin our work. The first step is to install the gas piping and pressurize it for the rough-in inspection. Once the rough-in inspection is passed your county or city inspector will submit the authorization to BGE. BGE will then contact you to schedule the meter installation. This may take several weeks depending on their schedule loading. Once that is complete, we’ll then connect the meter to your new gas system and connect your appliances. A final inspection by an inspector will complete the job.

Propane installation differs in that you contact a local propane supplier and work out the installation of a tank on your property. The remaining steps are similar except that instead of a meter you get a tank.

Gas Pipe Installation

If you’re hoping to install new gas piping to new appliances within your existing system, we can help. These could include water heaters, dryers, furnaces, stoves, gas log sets, generators, or even pool heaters. Typically, this involves teeing into an existing pipe or connecting to an available outlet on a manifold. Depending on the application, the pipe type will either be black steel, CSST flexible piping, or copper and will be terminated at the new location with a shutoff valve. The pipe will be installed in the least intrusive manner possible to minimize drywall and other repairs. Once ready, the appliance can be installed and enjoyed.

Gas Appliance Installation

If you’ve purchased a new appliance to take the place of an existing one, we can install that for you as well. As long as there is an existing shutoff valve, we can simply remove what you currently have and install the new one. If there’s no shutoff valve, we will have to install one to bring your home up to the current code and then we can install the new appliance for you.

Gas Leak Repair

According to BGE, in the event of a potential natural gas leak:

  • Leave the premises immediately and go to a safe place where you can call BGE at 1-800-685-0123.
  • Extinguish all open flames. Do not use matches or lighters and do not attempt to light an appliance.
  • Do not touch any phones, switches, thermostats, or appliances. All devices, including battery-operated equipment, can cause sparks.
  • Do not start or turn off any motorized equipment. Abandon any motorized equipment you may be operating.
  • Do not attempt to find the source of the leak or to repair a leak.

Remember, if you smell gas, leave your home first, then call 1-800-685-0123.

Once BGE has alleviated the emergency and located the leak call Alpha Plumbing at 410‐255‐5998 or request service online to schedule your appointment with one of our expert plumbers to make the repair.

If you believe you have a propane leak follow the same procedures except contact Alpha Plumbing, not BGE.
